CPL Portfolio Assessment
Why might I want to develop a Portfolio?
If you are like most returning adult learners, you have accumulated learning and knowledge throughout your work and life experiences that may be similar to that which others have acquired by taking a college course.
The development of a portfolio for assessing your accumulated learning and knowledge is a unique way of earning college credits. By documenting learning outside the classroom, hundreds of adult students have saved countless tuition dollars and classroom hours by earning credits based on the learning and knowledge acquired outside of the traditional classroom.
How do I develop a portfolio?
If you would like to move forward with a Portfolio Assessment please submit your completed CPL Application, along with your detailed resume, to Prior Learning Coordinator Nicole Sheldon ([email protected]).

What are the Fees associated with Credit for Prior Learning? Are they covered by Financial Aid?
There may be fees associated with some Credit for Prior Learning options. A current list of fees and payment steps can be found at https://www.ccri.edu/priorlearning/faqs.html.
Credit for Prior Learning fees, where applicable, are typically not covered by Financial Aid and must be paid prior to the posting of credit. Assessment fees for portfolios and challenge exams are to be paid prior to the assessment and are required regardless of credit outcome.
How will Credit for Prior Learning appear on my CCRI academic transcript?
Credit for Prior Learning will appear on your CCRI academic transcript as a “T” rather
than a letter grade. It will appear on your CCRI academic transcript under a category
with the heading “transfer credit accepted by the institution” (meaning accepted by
CCRI). CPL credit won't be removed from your CCRI transcript once it is posted.
What if I plan to transfer? Will this credit transfer to another institution?
You should discuss any transfer plans with a CCRI Academic Advisor before pursuing Credit for Prior Learning to best position yourself for transfer (for example, which specific courses to take and whether or not Credit for Prior Learning would be beneficial to you).

Once you make the transfer, if you have any questions about how the credit transferred in, you may be able to contact the receiving institution’s Credit for Prior Learning/Prior Learning Assessment Coordinator or Transfer Coordinator.
How Long Will it Take to Assess a completed Portfolio?
The amount of time needed to assess your petition will depend on a number of factors, such as the type of courses chosen, the contents of the portfolio, and even the time of year. On average, once a portfolio has been accepted, the actual assessment should be completed within 6 to 8 weeks. However, the CCRI cannot guarantee this time frame. If you need the credits by a certain date to meet a graduation or promotional deadline, plan ahead to allow ample time for the assessment to be completed.
NOTE: If CLEP or DSST are available for any of the courses listed in your application, you will likely be advised to take the exam. Credits awarded from the exams are recognized at many colleges and universities across the nation.
