Accounting Certificate
By providing an academic foundation in accounting, the Accounting certificate program prepares students for entry-level positions in the accounting field. It may also be completed in order to enhance skills of individuals currently employed in accounting-related positions. Students interested in this program should develop a plan of study to coordinate the timing and availability of all courses.
Upon completion of this concentration students should be able to:
- Prepare complex financial statements.
- Use accounting information to make informed decisions about the internal operations of a company.
- Use accounting software.
- Prepare personal income tax returns.
- Identify personal financial issues of individuals.
Basic Accounting Skills Certificate
The Basic Accounting Skills Certificate program is designed to provide the student with sufficient knowledge to qualify for entry-level
accounting clerk and bookkeeping positions. The certificate also provides students
with sufficient knowledge to keep a simple set of accounting books and
records.
Most credits earned in this program can be applied to the Accounting Certificate and the Associate Degree program in Business Administration with a major in Accounting or General Business.
Upon completion of this certificate program students should be able to:
- Understand and prepare basic financial statements.
- Use accounting information to make informed decisions about the internal operations of a company.
- Demonstrate appropriate industry technological skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and build interpersonal skills needed to work cooperatively with others.
Entrepreneurship Certificate
This certificate program provides individuals with a basic understanding of the principles, concepts and procedures necessary to start a small business. After completing core and elective courses, students apply their knowledge through an entrepreneurial capstone course that requires the development of a complete business plan. During this capstone course, students work independently, with faculty guidance, but without benefit of classroom instruction. Business plans are reviewed by a committee of volunteer advisors from the business community who may establish their own guidelines and requirements for the business plan.
Upon successful completion of this certificate program students should be able to:
- Identify accounting concepts that enable them to interpret financial data and use it to make informed decisions about the operating performance and financial position of a company.
- Apply leadership and workplace relationship skills that will enable them to deal with customer, employee, and supplier issues.
- Know the legal issues of operating a business.
- Know all aspects of operating a small business.
- Identify successful marketing efforts that will enable the business to succeed.
- Complete a comprehensive business plan that will enable the business to secure adequate financing.
Financial Services Certificate
This certificate in Financial Services is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in the financial services industry, which includes banking, insurance and investments. Also, individuals who are already working in the industry and seeking promotion to a higher position can benefit from earning this certificate. Courses in accounting, personal income taxes, personal finance, money and banking and investments will provide a strong foundation. A course in sales will enable the student to acquire tools to sell the types of products offered by companies in the industry.
Upon completion of this concentration students should be able to:
- Identify accounting concepts that enable them to interpret financial data and use it to make informed decisions.
- Describe personal financial and basic investment concepts.
- Apply the art of salesmanship to enable them to promote the products of the firms they are employed with.
- Identify the monetary and banking issues that are pervasive in all aspects of financial service.
Management Certificate
The Certificate Program in Management begins with a study of basic principles, concepts and procedures. Upon successful completion of these initial courses, students apply their knowledge in a capstone management strategy course. This final course allows students to apply previous learning through cases, simulations and integrated activities. Students are expected to use and demonstrate reasoning skills, strategies and a basic understanding of decision-making.
Upon completion of this concentration program students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge and application of management concepts and approaches including the four managerial functions.
- Apply tools and techniques for management decision making.
- Identify and apply ethical principles in management decision making.
- Locate, retrieve, evaluate, organize, and analyze information for management/leadership decision making.
- Construct and deliver oral and/or written analysis of business scenarios.
- Work with and/or lead a diverse team toward goal accomplishment.
Marketing Certificate
The Marketing certificate program provides students with both an academic foundation and practical skills development in the field of marketing. It is ideal for individuals already working in the business world who seek a background in marketing or those who wish to explore the field by studying a variety of up-to-date topics.
Upon completion of this concentration students should be able to:
- Describe what marketing entails and show how the components are implemented.
- Demonstrate how creating value leads to customer loyalty.
- Design appropriate and effective advertising plan strategies.
- Conduct both primary and secondary marketing research to make informed decisions.
- Demonstrate the effectiveness of the various components of integrative marketing communications through various channels -- including written and oral communications.
Workplace Essentials Certificate
This focused Certificate program provides students with an opportunity to develop basic business skills to better understand the workplace providing a blend of soft skills, theory, and practical application to support entry or re-entry into the workforce.
Successful completion of this certificate provides students with both an academic foundation and practical skills for navigating the workplace. It is ideal for individuals re-entering the workplace, or for those already working in the business world who seek opportunities for personal and professional growth in for-profit and non-profit firms.
Note: All credits earned in this certificate program can be applied toward the A.S. Degree in Business Administration, A.A. Degree in General Studies. Two courses require prerequisites, corequisites and/or testing. See course descriptions for details.

- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
- Describe and discuss the various factors necessary for cultivating a business.
- Distinguish among the various forms of business ownership.
- Demonstrate an understanding of effective management principles as outlined in selected text learning objectives.
- Demonstrate research and analytical skills by using both human and technological resources.
- Perform fundamental tasks common to most application software including word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.
- Recognize and demonstrate an understanding of core concepts and theories of public, interpersonal, and small group communication.
- Apply theories and skills to be a competent communicator in a variety of contexts with diverse audiences.
