Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

CCRI's Hazardous Waste collection program only accepts hazardous waste generated in the course of authorized college activities. No household hazardous waste may be brought on to college premises for disposal at college expense. Disposal of hazardous waste generated in the home is the responsibility of the homeowner. Fortunately, the state of Rhode Island has an excellent program for the proper and convenient disposal of such wastes.

The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) now conducts the state's ECO-DEPOT household hazardous waste program. RIRRC is located at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston, RI. Wastes are collected in Johnston near the Central Landfill and at other convenient locations around the state. The program is free for Rhode Island homeowners and drop-offs must be scheduled ahead of time. Only household waste from Rhode Island residents can be accepted.

Some materials accepted for disposal are aerosol cans, antifreeze, automotive batteries, fluorescent lights, lawn chemicals, mothballs, pool chemicals, propane tanks, oil-based paints, paint thinners, pesticides and herbicides. Motor oil and gasoline are not accepted.

RIRRC also enables state residents to dispose of waste without traveling to the Central Landfill through collections conducted at satellite locations in Rhode Island.
